Gyeongsangbuk-do
Province is the home for Korea’s kingdoms and a spiritual hub for Buddhism.

Located in the southeast region of the peninsula, Gyeongbuk, (short for Gyeongsangbuk-do), still echoes with the culture, spirituality and lifestyles of Korea’s past kingdoms ? particularly, the Shilla Kingdom. Its grand palaces can be witnessed at the Gyeongju National Museum and visitors are welcome to stop by royal tombs as well. The meticulously preserved historic villages of Andong and Yeongju will also give visitors a rare glimpse into the past.

But you can do more than just look. Gyeongbuk’s countless attractions invite you to touch ? to experience things firsthand. Partake in the Kyeongju Biking Tour. Spend a couple nights at Suedang, a 100-year-old Korean home, and split logs and create paper art as did people of the Joseon dynasty. To wind down, visit Mungyeong, the hometown of traditional Korean tea-ware, for some tea and quiet.

And that’s just on land.

Seafarers can venture into the East Sea and head for Dokdo and Ulleungdo. Dokdo, comprised of large rocks, was form by a volcanic eruption. Known as a bird’s paradise, it serves as a boundary between Korea and Japan. The East Sea, in turn, is an essential source of livelihood for the people of Gyeongbuk.

But one of the best ways to befriend the locals is through festivals. From a bullfighting gala to a fete just for mushrooms, the choices are endless. A local favorite, though, is the annual Andong International Mask Festival. You’d be surprised by the vast array of cultural masks, and you can even pick up mask-dance moves from around the world.

So tune in and learn all about Gyeongbuk. The show, and the province, will appeal to your sense of adventure.
