Chungcheongnam-do boasts quite a few quirky claims to fame.

For starters, it’s home to Korea’s most popular mud festival, a headquarters for mosi (a type of fabric) and a well-preserved trove for nature that’s also surrounded by shores.

Chung-nam’s Daecheon Beach is visited every summer by tourists who’ve come to enjoy the sand and sea, as well as the Boryeong Mud Festival, which is held every July. Visitors also like to stock up on Chung-nam’s famous local ginseng (which is said to have seven medicinal benefits) and to drink a liquor made of ginseng called Geumsan's Insamju. Of course, tourists can also enjoy Chung-nam’s famous Hansan Sogokju, a traditional Korean rice wine popular among the Royal Baekje court about 1300 years ago.

But good food and drinks aside, Chung-nam’s cultural offerings are just as tempting. There’s the Hansan Mosi Museum, which features plenty of mosi pieces as well as an interactive hand-weaving exhibit. Across the street from this museum is the Hansan Sogokju Brewery, which has been designated a Korean Intangible Cultural Property. Hamsang Park, Asia’s first war-ship theme park, promises extra excitement in Chung-nam. And the Neungsanri Royal Tombs allow tourists the chance to visit the burial sites of kings and other royalty.

Then there’s the Oeamri Folk Village, where lifestyles from centuries ago have been preserved.
And at the Korean Museum of Traditional Architecture, established by the master carpenter, Jeonheungsuhong, visitors can get a deeper taste of the history behind the country’s landmarks.

And what about for rest and relaxation, you ask? Well, for starters, you can catch a performance by the Hanullim Performing Art Group and enjoy Samulnori, Korea's traditional drum performance. For something more luxurious, indulge in hot springs filled with minerals and components said to be great for health and skincare.

Whatever your preference for fun, Chung-nam has it all. So watch and learn why you should head there soon.
