Jeonnam, in the southwestern region of Korea, is a province abundant with arts, good eats, good scents (it’s a manufacturing hub for green tea) and centuries of history.

Blessed with rivers, mountains, a bamboo forest and much more, even the yellow earth in Jeonnam is considered a living treasure. Filled with calcium carbonate, iron and magnesium, it was used in popular folk remedies before the advent of modern technology and medicine.

Visitors can further get a whiff of yesteryear in Gokseong Town, where you can hop in the steam locomotive and travel as if back in time. Traditional villages abound in Jeonnam, and Naganeupseong is a prime example of lifestyles preserved from a century ago. When it comes to art, traditional Korean paintings, Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain have origins here. Jeonnam is also home to the Jindo National Center of Korean Traditional Performing Arts of Namdo. A combination of art and nature can be found in the architecture of the area’s temples, such as Mihwangsa.

Jeonnam is also home to the Yeosu National Industry District, which produces and exports oil related products, and the Gwangyang Steel Mill, which manufactures 18 million tons of steel. The province is also widely regarded as a global port.

Scenic pleasures abound here as well. Whether it’s the melding of islands, stones and cobalt sea at Dadohae National Sea Park or the countless sights to behold from the Seomjin Ferry, Jeonnam will prove itself a picturesque, unforgettable memory.

The province’s annual festivals are also can’t-miss attractions. The Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, an ecology education program introducing nature and butterflies, is a favorite, as is the Bosung Green Tea Festival.

Movie fans can also stop by the filming locations of some of Korea’s most popular works.

So head to Jeonnam and experience one of Korea’s most charming provinces.
